The training of students in the field of “Design” at the university dates back to 1998, when it was first introduced at the Department of Architecture, which from its establishment until 2005 was headed by Candidate of Architecture, Associate Professor R.U. Chekayeva.
In 2005, by Order No. 8 dated March 19, 2005, an independent department named “Design” was established. Candidate of Architecture A.Sh. Chikanaev was appointed as the Head of the Department.
In the following years, the department was headed by Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences E.K. Asylkhanov.
In 2009, the department obtained a state license to train master’s degree students in the specialty “Design”, which became an important milestone in the development of postgraduate education and the training of scientific and pedagogical staff.
In 2011, the Department of Fine Arts was merged with the Department of Design, and Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor T.A. Tolkynbayev was appointed as the head of the united department.
In 2012, the Department of Design was merged with the Department of Descriptive Geometry and Computer Graphics, resulting in the formation of the Department of Engineering Graphics and Design. It should be noted that the history of teaching graphic disciplines dates back to the 1960s, when the Department of Descriptive Geometry functioned at the Tselinograd Civil Engineering Institute (TCEI). Later, on the basis of this institute, the L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University was established.
Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor A.K. Baidabekov was appointed as the Head of the Department of Engineering Graphics and Design.
In 2015, the department received its modern name “Design and Engineering Graphics”, which was due to the fact that the main training of graduates was carried out in the field of Design, while engineering graphics disciplines performed a supporting and service function in the educational process.
From September 2023 to June 2025, the duties of the Head of the Department were performed by Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor T.K. Samuratova.
Since June 2025 to the present, the department has been headed by PhD, graduate of the international “Bolashak” program (United Kingdom), Zhanar Talgatovna Omarova.
Currently, the Department of Design and Engineering Graphics implements educational programs in the following areas:
